B was almost 6 when he started Kindergarten and was very
well prepared to do everything that is now required when you start school. He
continues to be an excellent student and learner, which makes us really happy.
S could have gone to Kindergarten this year, but after long consideration, we
held her back. Not because she wasn't ready educationally or socially, we just
felt she was on the littler side and would be the youngest in class and another
year would benefit her in the long run.
That being said, we really hope that when August 2015 rolls around, S will be more than ready for all that Kindergarten will throw at her. She goes to preschool 3 days a week, it is a great class, completely geared for older kids who just barely missed the cutoff or who needed the gift of time. We also work with her at home, maybe not as much as we should, but we do workbooks, crafts, and activities that will teach and stimulate her mind, but I am always looking for new and fun ideas.
I was recently introduced to a company that provides educational material in a super fun way. Rock 'N Learn offers over 50 products that are geared for kids of all ages. These products are unique because they incorporate music into the learning. I could not wait to learn more!
In 1986, Richard Caudle, who was working as a school
psychologist, saw a need for multi sensory learning programs that used music
kids love. Luckily, his younger brother Brad was an accomplished musician. They
put their ideas together and recorded a program on multiplication facts which
was a huge hit and lead to the founding of Rock 'N Learn. Located in Texas,
Richard and Brad are still the owners and operators, but also have their wives
on board to help manage, write programs, and coordinate the company. Rock 'N Learn's
number one goal is to provide children with programs that make learning easier
and fun. To read more about the team, click here.
Rock 'N Learn offers programs in math, phonics, reading,
social studies, Spanish, writing, science, early childhood, and even
test-taking strategies. All of the DVDs incorporate catchy music, bright
colors, and fun pictures while providing quality learning opportunities. Not
only do parents love these programs, they have been used in school districts
too. Rock 'N Learn has consulted with parents and educators to develop some
really amazing products. The Rock 'N
Learn programs have received many awards including: Dr. Toy, Parents' Choice,
iParenting, National Parenting Publications, Learning Magazine Teachers'
Choice, Early Childhood News, National Parenting Center, and Parent's Guide to
Children's Media.
I was offered the chance to review a set of the Rock 'N Learn Sight Words DVD collection. I knew this would be perfect for S and her journey towards Kindergarten. This collection retails for $51.99 and includes 3 DVDs, Sight Words Level 1/2/3
Our Rock 'N Learn package has arrived!
S was excited to open the package and see what was inside.
We found a whole bunch of goodies inside!
The first thing we found was the 2014 Rock 'N Learn catalog.
This catalog was filled with music and videos for fun learning. Each page was broken into categories for early childhood, reading/language arts, math, languages, social studies, and science. The pages were filled with pictures of the products and wonderful, helpful information about what each item offered. It also included all pricing and even had special codes for products that meet Common Core State Standards.
Next was a letter from Cindy, the communications coordinator. She gave me great information about the products and also things I would need for the review (like a coupon code and giveaway info).
We also got a new pencil, which is great because we go through so, so many pencils in this house. We also got a ruler/bookmark which had a silly joke from Chip and Word Bot, the kids thought it was a pretty good one.
Now on to the real fun, the Rock 'N Learn Sight Words DVD collection. All three of the DVDs contain fun, characters like Word Bot (S's favorite), Chip, and an assortment of more. The characters use engaging activities, songs, and humor to keep viewers interested. With over 60 sight words in each of the videos, these words are the most frequently used words in the English language.
This DVD contains Pre-K Dolch words and many Fry words.
Check out a sample of Level 1
This has been the level we have used the most so far. S is allowed to watch movies in the car when we are waiting for B in the pickup line at school, this usually gives her about 20 minutes of time to watch and learn. I don't feel so guilty knowing she is really hearing and remembering what is being taught. This video contains over 60 words for learning and is about 50 minutes long.
This DVD contains Kindergarten Dolch words and many Fry words.
Check out the sample of Level 2
Check out the sample of Level 2
This level begins where level 1 left off. This video is still a bit much for S as she is still really trying to grasp all of level 1. I am confident in her, that pretty soon she will be ready to completely be on level 2. This level is really geared more towards children who are starting to read at a Kindergarten/1st grade level. This video contains over 65 words and is about 61 minutes long.
This DVD contains First Grade Dolch words and many Fry words.
Watch this sample of Level 3
This level is the most advanced of the three and really focuses on the viewers ability to read words quickly and help improve their fluency, which also helps with better comprehension. We have not gotten very far in this video so that we don't overwhelm S with what she is capable of, but I know it will be fantastic for her in the future. This video contains over 70 words and is about 50 minutes long.
I have been really impressed with our sight words DVDs and will recommend these to anyone I know who needs something new and different to engage their child. I think the multiplication rap and multiplication rock would both be a great fit for B right now too.
