Part of the MBP Newborn Guide
Having a new baby at home is so, so sweet. I am loving my sweet little girl, and am finding the time to figure out this whole new 'mommy of two' world. With new babies come new baby products, and lots of baby gear. We actually got a lot of new items for Baby S, including an infant swing, car seat, and stroller. While we love these products, and are enjoying using them (as they make our lives easier!), we have one common concern with all of them- the dreaded baby head flop problem.
It can't really be helped. I mean, a newborn can't control or support his/her own head. S wants to hold that head up, and she's already working to strengthen those muscles, but we know she's not quite there yet. We run into issues with her delicate little head flopping to the side in her car seat, the stroller, and the swing. Though all of these products offer a bit of cushioning around the head area, none of them offer true support.
When I first saw Baby Elephant Ears, I wasn't quite sure what they were or what they were supposed to do. Once I checked them out, the design made perfect sense.
Baby Elephant Ears was created out of parental concern, not financial desire. Baby Elephant Ears Creator, Alicia truly loves being a mom, but in 2005, when their second child, Finn, was an infant her heart ached for her tiny baby boy. Finn cried all the time and just couldn't seem to get comfortable. As Alicia recounts from those fretful days of parenting. We had to run our vacuum cleaner for hours on end because the noise was the only thing that seemed to give him comfort.
After seeking advice and suggestion from the medical community and alternative medicine they eventually ended up in the chiropractors office where Finn was successfully treated for a subluxation. The chiropractor explained that Finn's discomfort was most likely the result of the strain Finn experienced during labor and was now being exacerbated by the normal lack of infant neck strength. The hope was that Finn would experience relief in his sore neck and his digestive tract would be aided by proper head, neck and back alignment. The chiropractor suggested the Overbys try using something to support their baby and better support his head and neck when he was in a seated position (such as a car seat, stroller, or carrier). Unsatisfied that she couldn't find anything that fulfilled her needs perfectly on the market, Alicia did what any good parent would do- she took matters into her own hands and crafted her own infant support pillow. The first Baby Elephant Ears was born!
Over time Finn changed and adjusted to life outside of the womb with much help from his new support pillow. Alicia determined the experiment had been a success worthy of sharing with others.
Check out the adorable print/patterned pair of Baby Elephant Ears we received for Baby S!
I don't like to see my sweet Baby S in any discomfort. We love to go for walks and use the stroller, and S loves to nap in her baby swing, but with both of these baby gear products, her head flops to one side, and I know it can't be comfortable for her. I was easger to give Baby Elephant Ears a try, so I could see if it made a difference in the way her head laid while strapped into these products.
Baby S, napping in her swing... see how her head is elevated, but flopped to one side?
Much better!
Baby Elephant Ears are so adorable. They look like little elephant ears or butterfly wings! They provide a soft, safe cushion and support system for baby's head as baby grows and develops. Baby Elephant Ears are easy to use- simply slide the cushion behind your baby's neck, making sure they are down to the bottom of the neck. Next, pull the lower 'ear lobes' slightly out in front of baby's shoulders. This is a comfy position for baby, and keeps baby from slumping over.

We love our Baby Elephant Ears. I no longer worry about S' head flopping over while she's sitting up, in a seat or in a baby gear product, such as the stroller, swing or car seat. It's important to note that Baby Elephant Ears are not intended for use with cribs or bassinets. Spit happens, usually when S is in one of these baby gear products. Fortunately, Baby Elephant Ears can be machine washed on cold and dried on warm. Thank goodness!
Baby Elephant Ears are one of those must-have baby products. I wish I'd had a pair when B was a baby- his poor little head flopped all over the place (esp. in his car seat). These would made a wonderful gift, so if you're heading to a baby shower, be sure to consider Baby Elephant Ears!
