Okay you guys, I want to start this post by saying I am not a big drinker. If you knew me before I had kids, that statement may surprise you, but these days I may have a wine cooler or similar drink every few weeks/months.
So, now you may be wondering why on Earth I am posting a hot toddy recipe. Well, it's been pretty cold here in Connecticut, we've all had some sort of cold that goes away for a bit and then comes right back, and the biggest reason of all-I heard it was Hot Toddy day last Thursday and I'm pretty much late for everything!
I've never had a hot toddy before last night, but I've heard that people drink them to warm up and to help fight colds. I'm not sure if either of those things actually happen if you choose to enjoy a hot toddy, but they are pretty tasty. Since I've never made a hot toddy before, I went ahead and did an internet search for a recipe. The "Spiced Rum Hot Toddy" is adapted from one I found on The Spruce.
Spiced Rum Hot Toddy
You will need:
2 oz (in my kitchen it's known as a 1/4 cup) spiced rum
Honey (to coat the bottom of your Hot Toddy cup/mug)
1/2 oz of lemon juice (the original called for fresh, I used what I had, the one in a plastic lemon)
1 cup hot tea
Warm up your hot toddy cup by filling it with warm water. Once the container is warm, dump the water and coat the bottom of the cup with honey. Add the 2 oz (1/4 cup) spiced rum and the lemon juice to the cup with honey. Pour the hot tea into the cup and stir.
Bottoms Up! |
I was pretty impressed with my first hot toddy and I am looking forward to eventually testing out different variations. As much as I enjoyed this cup, I did feel like the rum was a little too strong for my personal taste. I think next time I'll have to try it with a brandy or even a bourbon.
