What would your family do if something untimely happened to you? It's not something that we like to think about as moms or dads, but given that we're charged with the responsibility of protecting and caring for our children, it's a question that should not be ignored. Being a mom is the greatest joy of my life. It's such an incredible gift, and every day, my kids are reminding me of this, just by being themselves. I want to know that they will always be cared for and taken care of, financially speaking in the event that something unforeseen happens to me or my husband (or both).
I could almost cry as I think about it and sometimes do. I never want my kids to know what it is to grow up without their mother or father, but I am extremely realistic about the fact that it could happen. No parent should live their life in fear, but I do think about things like automobile accidents, random attacks, and the possibility of serious illness.
Did you know...
There were an estimated 40,100 motor vehicle deaths last year. Only a 1 percent drop from the prior year.
The possibility of getting into a car accident is almost always on my mind. I think about it every single time I get into a vehicle. I am neurotic about car safety- proper seatbelt usage, checking car seats for proper and safe restraint and making sure that my 7-year-old, who is now too big/tall for a booster, is properly buckled, and seated in an upright position with both feet on the floor at all times.
My husband often travels out of town for rehearsals and concerts, making the journey home late at night. He's an excellent, very safe driver- but I'm very aware of the fact that anything could happen at any time. Just recently, there was a horrible car accident near our home, resulting in a fatality. It was so sad to hear about.
My kids are the most important people in existence to me. My husband and I have gone through all of the motions of appointing legal guardians and making sure that they will be financially cared for through adequate life insurance plans.
Why do moms need life insurance?
Honestly, everyone needs life insurance. I've had a life insurance policy of my own since I was a child, which my parents paid for. They instilled the knowledge of this important piece in my mind and heart at an early age. Both of them have lived through serious health scares but wanted to ensure that my sister and I were always cared for, just in case.
My husband and I are in our thirties, and as I inch closer to age 40, I am very aware that my chances of developing breast cancer only increase. My husband doesn't like to think or talk about the possibility of cancer taking my life, but I cannot rule out the possibility, and would rather be prepared than have no course of action to follow.

The cost of a total death bill can be quite astonishing. I got a little taste of this when my uncle passed away very suddenly over five years ago and left my beautiful aunt to pick up the pieces. I couldn't believe how much everything cost- from caring for remains, planning a service, paying for assistance from a funeral home, not to mention medical expenses, debts, and more.
