Our first married date night! We went to see Bohemian Rhapsody. |
I dated my husband for nearly 11 years before I married him. By the time we finally did get married this past October, we were extremely comfortable in our relationship. We weren’t going out as a couple very much and we were content to just stay home. While we did hang out at home together, too often, we’d find ourselves spending time by ourselves, with me downstairs reading a book, and him upstairs on his computer. Not that this introvert doesn’t love (and sometimes, need) some good quality time alone, but I didn’t want to start our marriage off on this foot.
While on our honeymoon, we agreed that we’d continue to date each other. Life is blessedly long and spending it with one person takes effort and work that we are both willing to put in. Sitting on a white sandy beach in sunny Aruba, we agreed to a monthly date night. While it seems un-romantic to schedule date night, life is busy, so sometimes it’s necessary. So, sometime during the first weekend of each month, I go on a date with my husband. Three “date nights” later, it’s going well and doing wonders for our relationship.
Here are some easy, affordable date night (or day!) ideas we’ve come up with:
- Dinner and a movie (Yep. Classic, but not boring. Our first date night as a married couple, we had dinner and went to see Bohemian Rhapsody. We both loved it. The perfect indoor date night idea!)
- Explore a botanical garden
- Take a cooking class
- Go hiking
- Go camping for a night
- At-home date night - Order dinner in and watch a movie or play a game (The trick is to put your phone away and just spend time together)
- Wander through an art gallery or museum
- Go ice skating
- Create and go on a scavenger hunt
- Browse a bookstore
- Take a drive - Flip a coin at each turn. Heads is left, tails is right. See where you end up.
- Take a yoga class together
- Go see live music
- Attend a trivia night
- Go biking around your city
- Attend a guided tour of your city and pretend to be tourists
- Have a picnic in the backyard
- Visit your local drive-in movie theatre
- Feed ducks at the pond
- Stargaze - either in your backyard or at your local planetarium
Not all of these are free, but they’re all affordable. To add another twist, my husband and I trade off on whose turn it is to plan date night. It’s so much fun to plan a surprise for him every other month, and when it’s his turn, I look forward to what he’s come up with for us to do together. Being married to your best friend is the best thing ever - That definitely shouldn’t mean that you stop dating each other!
