I don't know where you live, but here in the midwest, we've had our share of gray days, snowy days, and rainy days. Like other stay at home mamas, I've tried lots of tricks to keep my kids active and engaged through this long winter. As the first picture suggests, I usually try to incorporate some sort of baking activity with Hendrix. He loved helped stirring and putting the sprinkles on the cupcakes.
My favorite sensory bin right now is trucks in a bin of cornmeal. Hendrix thinks the texture is cool and it is safe if Maverick gets some in his mouth.
About a year ago, I wrote letters on a baking sheet and bought corresponding letters. I put these in eggs as Hendrix loves to open eggs and then he matches them to the cookie sheet. I also have one for numbers, but he really likes the letters.
The boys love this sloth they got for Christmas.
Sometimes we just change rooms and hang out in one of the boys' rooms for a bit. Maverick and Hendrix like to wrestle this giant sloth they got for Christmas from a good friend. They can go a solid 15 minutes playing with this giant stuffed creature and allows me to at least start some laundry, put away clothes, or something else quick.
Other ideas:
- Pull out older toys or toys that have been put away for awhile
- Do a craft: Painting, building, coloring
- Build a fort
- Play hide and seek
- Play in the bathtub or shower
- Have a dance party
- Visit a local museum (We love our Children's Museum)
Many of these have kept the boys busy and active on the dreary days when there's not much else to do.
What do you like to do on rainy days?
Excellent ideas. We have a good Children's Museum here in Denver.
