I love the Halloween season: pumpkins, kids running around in costumes, nostalgic movies, and things that "go bump in the night". I've never been into the Poltergeist/ Scream terror part of Halloween but ghost walks (even though I won't sleep at all that night!) and corn mazes are certainly up my alley.
Growing up, I lived in your typical '90's town. Our parents took us around to trick-or-treat in homemade costume, we ransacked our candy before bed, handed out Halloween cards to our school classmates, and maybe got invited to a party or two.
As an adult, I've often participated in the trick-or-treat or trunk-or-treat side of things but haven't gotten invited to many Halloween Costume parties over the years, so I often resort to hanging out at home and reminiscing in my favorite movies.
I thought I'd share with you my top three favorite movies I like to watch around Halloween. I know that we all like different genres and styles, so yours may be totally different, and that's okay!
1) Hocus Pocus (staring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch, and Vanessa Shaw)
The Top Winner is this 1993 film that always makes me laugh and smile! I imagine most everyone has heard of this film by now and either loves or hates it, but I absolutely love it!
The Dennison family just moved to Salem, MA. A young teen is forced to take his sister out trick-or-treating. While doing so, he meets his class crush and desperately tries to impress her. In the process of the evening, the trio wakes the spirits of the Sanderson Sisters, witches who have been long gone and now come back to al the twists of the 20th century.
As a kid, I generally thought this movie was scary: after all it had witches, zombies (Billy makes me laugh now), chasing plots, and even hypnotized parents! As an adult, the quips and lines are so much fun because we finally understand what they mean!
Hands down my top Halloween pick!
2) Haunted Mansion
This Eddie Murphy film is sure to entertain. As a real estate agent, he moves his family into this home and ends up having to deal with a whole bunch of problems that just won't leave him alone, including a few pesky ghosts. In the process, he learns how family is important and to stop working so much!
This movie is a gem that is a must-see around Halloween! And for all you Disney fans, it's the reason the Haunted Mansion ride exists at the theme parks!
3) Halloween Town
This is actually one of a 4-series movie set that takes adventures Marnie through the perils of being a teenage witch. As she grows up, Marnie learns about her family roots, her passions, and her power to do great things! This one does have a bit of a creep factor to it and I still get spooked by some of the scenes.
There are many other contenders but these are my top three! I definitely recommend watching one or all of these movies around Halloween!!
What's your favorite Halloween Movie?
