Did you know that your skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated? Really! It doesn't need to have 27 steps to it, it doesn’t need to be something you do every morning and night, and you don’t need to constantly worry about how it’s helping your skin. Instead, you should simply focus on doing things that make you feel good, which will then be reflected in the way you look!
And sometimes that means doing a little research and thinking about what might be missing from the way you take care of yourself. The skincare products you use right now are probably just fine, but the more you know about the way your skin behaves, the better! So let’s take a little look into some of the elements of skincare that people forget about.
Clean Your Makeup Off Properly
There is a chance, if you wear a lot of makeup, that you’re not removing it properly each night. And you should always take it off before you go to sleep! But even when you do, there could still be a bit of foundation or eyeshadow hanging around, waiting to clog up your pores when your eyes are closed.
To prevent this ever happening again, it’s a good idea to invest in some makeup removal products that are kind to the skin. Creams are the best for this. You can put a bit in your hands at a time and rub it into different sections of the face, slowly working off the makeup and taking your time to ensure it’s all gone. You’ll also be able to moisturize as you go!
Moisturize Your Hands
Your hands might be in some serious need of TLC! They go through everything throughout the day - and we mean everything - and that can leave them dry, cracked, and not looking their best at all. That might be bothering you right now, especially if there’s a lot of fraying and peeling around the nails.
So, this is definitely one of the top issues to think about when considering your skincare routine. It’s not just your face! It’s the whole body, and if your hands are always dry, they’re going to need a bit of moisturizing as well. Try to apply moisture at least twice a day; your hands are always in motion and need heavier layering, unlike the skin on your face.
Use a Serum
If you’re not one for moisturizing creams, or you’ve never quite found a good enough moisturizer for your skin type, you may want to use a serum instead. Serums are far more of a liquid, which means they can be more easily absorbed, and they don’t take ages to rub in either!
Plus, serums tend to have a higher pool of healthy substances for your skin to use, meaning they're more effective in half the amount. And you can use a serum at any point during a skincare routine, so they’re really not all that hard to apply.
Don’t Exfoliate Too Hard
Exfoliating feels like it needs to be done hard and rough, doesn’t it? But if you’re using a hardy exfoliator and rubbing it in for minutes on end, it could be doing you a lot of damage. You want to exfoliate gently, and make sure your skin feels smooth and silky afterwards, rather than just red and sensitive. This can happen, but it shouldn’t be the only result of using your exfoliating products!
If you’re regularly using a product that leaves your skin feeling like it’s burning when you’re done, you could be allergic or it could be just too heavy for you. Use a wet, cold flannel to cool down the area before you apply anything else and then think about buying a different pot!
Put on Plenty of Sun Protection
Sun protection is crucial to a skincare routine, and is probably more important than any of the other steps combined! You want your skin to be ready to face the sun and soak up some vitamin D, but you should never go out without that barrier in place. Go for SPF 50.
If you’re a makeup fan, apply suncream as the first step; it’s a good moisturizer and primer in one, so you could probably eliminate two steps from your beauty routine in one go here!
Change Your Pillowcase
The dirt from the day can make its way onto your bedding at night. Specifically, onto your pillowcase. If you don’t change the case once a week, this could be the cause of regular acne flare ups, and various blemishes that seem to come from nowhere. Change the case, get rid of anything that could clog your pores, and then sleep soundly knowing your skin won’t fall victim during the night!
Don’t Feel You Have to Follow a Skincare Routine Rigidly
We mentioned it at the beginning and we’re going to go over it again now we’re at the end! There is a chance you could be overdoing your skincare routine, and running your skin’s chances of ever restoring and/or maintaining its own pH balance. This means it’s going to dry out faster, or produce more oils than ever before, even as you combat ‘oiliness’ with everything you’ve got!
Which means you might want to skip a couple days every week. Let your skin ‘sort itself out’ for just those two mornings or evenings and see how it can boost your healthy efforts the rest of the time. It is possible to have too much of a good thing, and you really don’t want to make your skin work any harder than it already does!
A skincare routine that doesn't include elements like these may not go far enough. However, everyone is different, and it’s up to you what you really choose to do with your skin. If you want to make changes for the better, try out tips like these, but make sure you give your pores some room to breathe as well!
