Thanks to Farm Burger for hosting our visit to their downtown Asheville restaurant. All thoughts are my own! |
Finding meals that everyone can enjoy while the family is on vacation can be hard! With food allergies & restrictions, varied tastes, and differing budgets, seeking out restaurants that are good and affordable can be difficult as well, especially in a city like Asheville.
Never fear though, because Asheville has plentiful options for the family that wants great food but also needs the space to be loud and somewhat messy. By the end of a family vacation, we are tired, no matter whether it's just sisters hanging out for a week or the entire clan of kids in tow.
At the end of my Asheville adventures this trip, I really just wanted a meal that was easy, quick, affordable, and something I knew I would like.Farm Burger Downtown Asheville located on Patton Ave. |
Entering into the Asheville Food Picture: Farm Burger.
Once known as Farm 255 in Athens, GA, Farm Burger strives to be ethical and sustainable in the ways the restaurant sources meat, vegetables, and other products. Farm Burger prides itself on sourcing meats that come from farms who use no hormones, GMOS, or antibiotics to raise their animals.
With its expansion across the southeast, Farm Burger now resides in downtown Asheville and in South Asheville. The Asheville locations get most of their meats from Hickory Nut Gap Farm, located just right outside the city. Their chefs also utilize local ingredients and creativity as much as possible to keep the menu rotating so that customers don't get bored! Farm Burgers' motto is farm-fresh and local as much as possible, knowing that the customer will stand want some standard things (like the brands of ketchup and mustard!).
We had the chance to visit the downtown location and honestly, I was blown away. I wasn't sure what to expect as I thought of Farm Burger as a typical burger joint. It's really far from a typical burger joint, though!
I first heard about it because one of my friends in Hendersonville (outside of Asheville) mentioned that her kiddos request to eat there, and she said it was excellent! I figured if her 3 picky kiddos ate at Farm Burger, then it must have something going on! I wasn't wrong!
Farm Burger Indoors with Ordering Counter |
While there are "flagship" specialty burgers known as Blackboard Burgers, the majority of the menu is "Create Your Own Burger" style. The Burgers include grass fed beef, chicken, vegan, and beyond burger patties. Customization is plentiful with varied toppings and condiments. In the "Create Your Own" customized option, 3 toppings are included but extras cost more.
If the entire family (or a group of friends) is dining together, be sure to note that fries are ordered separately and are an additional expense. Yet, the fries are totally shareable. They have a few options too: like Garlic Parmesan, Sweet Potato, and even Greek topped.
If you aren't in the mood for fries, check out the amazing snack menu. Some of these items might be seasonal or specialty items that aren't available year round, like the Andouille Corn Pups or local deviled eggs. We were able to try out both of those snack items before our meals came out. Also- there is a good salad selection too!
Andouille Corn Pups |
The Andouille Corn Pups are basically a hush puppy with andouille sausage in the center. It's served with a spicy ketchup that makes all the sausage flavors pop! My sister didn't truly care for them, but I actually enjoyed them. As far as spice level, its definitely not bland, and the kick comes with the aftertaste. There were 3 or 4 pups, which isnt too bad to share amid friends and family!
The deviled eggs arrived 4 in a basket. Deviled Eggs are something that I can take or leave as they are often abundant at every church dinner and function I've been at during my full-time career as a youth director. It's really hard to make deviled eggs pop and its really easy to mess them up.
Deviled Eggs |
These specific ones definitely had paprika or chili powder, which gave it a fiery peppery taste! If you aren't a fan of heat, then these aren't for you!
For our main meals, I ordered a chicken burger and my sister ordered a beef burger. Oh- and you can ask for a lettuce wrap, or no bun, or gluten-free if need be for your burger!
Chicken Burger with Garlic Parm fries |
Now, when I first heard of chicken burger, I was thinking of a hunk of chicken sliced like a burger. Nope, this is actual ground chicken made into a patty. My antibiotic and hormone free chicken burger came out piping hot with all the toppings and condiments I requested. I decided upon house made pickles, grilled onions, and my favorite, the ever-popular and hardly ever-available heirloom tomato. Apparently they were just in fresh from a local farmer and do NOT last long with Farm Burger regulars! I did not add cheese but did add the special Sherry- Date BBQ sauce.
"Create Your Own" Chicken Burger and Fries |
There are various types of sauces at Farm Burger that can be added onto your burgers. The Sherry- Date BBQ sauce is made with sherry vinegar and dates, amid other things. It has a nice flavor= it's not sweet but it's not spicy either. There is also the ever popular Farm Burger sauce, different types of mustard and mayo, and even salsa verde.
I have to say that standing in front of the board, needing to order quickly, was kind of intimidating to figure out because the options are so plentiful! From garlic to Pork Belly, there are many items that one can choose as burger toppings!
House Pickles, Grilled Onion, Heirloom Tomato- Oh My! |
This chicken burger came out and it was huge! That is seriously the first thing I thought when I saw it. I also thought "There's no way I'm finishing this." And that was true. I did not finish all my meal, despite it being so good! Between the appetizers, the garlic Parmesan fries, and the chicken burger, my stomach was definitely full by the end of the night. I couldn't even save room for one of their fabulous shakes!
Create Your Own Burger and Regular Fries |
My sister's beef burger was large as well! She decided to get regular fries with her burger. Her burger was topped with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles topped with the Farm Burger sauce. As far as burgers go, she said it was messy and that it was good. Good burgers are typically messy, so that is a positive sign!
We didn't have children with us on this trip, but I noticed that the kids' menu is called Lil Farmers. The menu has burgers, grilled cheese, and chicken tenders to suit the varied tastes of children. Each one comes with a drink and a choice of: fresh fruit cup with sunflower dip or fries.
As far as Farm Burger's location, the restaurant has large table-top seating indoors for big families or groups, and smaller tables are available outdoors. I love the atmosphere because it's not a type of place that you have to be quiet. It's okay to be a little bit loud and messy at Farm Burger!
Check out that Lunch Combo! |
It's not a typical sit-down restaurant as ordering takes place at the counter. Servers do bring out the food to the customers though! Now= messy is all relative, of course, but there are rolls of paper towels at all the dining tables, so that always shows me that they are okay with a bit of mess here and there!
I love Farm Burger because it has hamburgers, chicken burgers, and even salads that everyone will love. There HAS to be something on this menu that all members of your family can fill their bellies with, even the pickiest of eaters. Trust me, I was a picky child, but I loved (and still do) my hamburgers! I can't wait to go back to try out a beef burger, actually! I was just in the mood for chicken that evening!
Various Types of Seating are Available! |
Farm Burger Downtown Asheville utilizes local ciders and breweries to source their adult beverages but has a plentiful coca-cola product selection as well! Water is available for free as well.
Farm Burger Downtown Asheville also has a couple of order online options if you aren't in the mood to eat in house. Pickup your food before heading home from work or call door dash for delivery. While we were there, we saw several delivery drivers picking up food, so it's a popular place to order from!
Outdoor Patios for when weather is nice! |
Definitely visit Farm Burger the next time you plan a trip to downtown Asheville. Your stomach will be filled no matter if you choose to create your own burger, order a Blackboard Burger special, or grab a snack to munch on!
