The Black Sheep, nestled in the heart of historic riverfront Beaufort, is the place you will want to take your entire family for a fabulous meal! Now, I'll be perfectly honest when I say that because I ate lunch so late that day, my stomach was not craving food, until I smelled all the wonderful scents coming from the restaurant.
This well-known establishment boosts pizza, sandwiches, and various appetizers that are mouth watering and stomach filling. Weekly soups, pizzas, and other specials will also entice minds and taste buds as well.
The Wednesday evening I visited, I chose to sit outside to admire the docks and Beaufort Inlet, despite the increasingly chill of the evening and blackness of the night descending upon us.
When I looked inside, it was fairly packed with folks grabbing a drink, a meal, and having plentiful conversations with their friends and family. Outside was quiet, with only a few tables taken, and I enjoyed the chance to rest and relax after a fun but long day visiting the Aquarium and Emerald Isle.
Having trouble deciding what I want, I asked the server for menu suggestions. Their various pizza specialities are the most ordered, but their sandwiches are full of delight as well. For those of you that love pizza, be aware that the Black Sheep's pizzas are 18 inches and are about 6 slices. Plenty big enough to split and share, but too much for my solo self.
While several of the appetizers seemed appealing. I was nervous that I'd be hungry later, so I opted for the sandwich menu. I decided upon the Blacksheep B.P.T. or the Bacon, Pimento Cheese, and green Tomato sandwich. My side options varied from potato salad to their special soup of the day.
Choosing the cup of French Onion Soup as my side, I sat in for a quiet evening of people watching, dock watching, and listening to the surrounding conversations. Since it's off season, this place wasn't full by any means, but it was rowdy enough, and it seemed like a local hangout inside, a place to grab a drink and food.
Out came my sandwich and soup. The sandwich, with pimento cheese falling off of it, was so large that I could only finish half of it! I loved the green tomato, the pimento cheese, and the nod of bacon within it. The bread was crispy and not rock hard, which I like in sandwiches too (btw, it was ciabatta bread). I mean, just look at the cheese dripping out! It was warm and very filling.
The soup. Oh my. First off, I had to dive through the covering of Gruyère Cheese to get to the liquid. The cheese was thick and crusty, just like it should be in French Onion Soup. The soup was hot, which was a comfort as the temp was dropping, and was plenty tasteful. There were bread crusts within the soup, as they are supposed to be, along with the thick onions and spices.
I was asked if I wanted dessert, but honestly, by the time I finished all of that, I couldn't fit anything else into my stomach. The server's enticement of ice cream sandwiches, cheesecake, and the like didn't do much for my woefully full stomach, and I didn't want to make myself sick later.
Unfortunately, my phone's battery life was on its last leg (a recommendation- make sure your power bank is with you, even if traveling by car. I walked around so much and was in the car so little that my phone didn't have much time to charge while en route), so I didn't get many photos of my meal but returned for daytime photos of the restaurant and noticed that later on in the week, it gradually became packed as patrons sought out comfort food on Thursday and Friday.
The Black Sheep also has a lounge known as the Green Room. Patrons can experience cocktails and draft beers in this small, cozy venue. I didn't venture in, so I can't say much about the experience, other than I saw quite a few folk nursing their drinks with their loved ones and friends in there!
I highly recommend that the Black Sheep be on your dining list, especially if your family has children in it, when you visit Beaufort. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu at all! I saw other menu selections come out, and all patrons seemed to really enjoy their meals. I also saw attentive and caring staff who cleaned the outside tables as well as they could too, which is a definite plus in my book!
Want to dine here?
I would definitely go back to the Black Sheep the next time I visit. I hope you visit this lovely, family-friendly restaurant when you head to the Crystal Coast!
