Wordful Wednesday - 9/11

Where were you on 9/11/2001?

9.11.2001

I was in middle school. A group of students our faculty advisors (assistant principal
and our guidance counselors) had left campus and went to a local church for Peer
Mediator training. The group of us were sitting in the parking lot playing a team-building
game when an older gentleman in a truck entered the parking lot, which we all thought was
strange. He called the adults over to his truck and told our advisors that they needed to take
us back to the school because our country had just been attacked. As students, we had no idea
what he had said till much later but I remember our assistant principal immediately got on the
phone with the school.
We ended up staying at the church the rest of the day and I kept wondering why the adults looked so scared and sad.
At the end of the day, the adults finally told us what had happened and that all afternoon activities had been canceled.
My Mom worked at my school, and I remember walking into her room at dismissal and she was crying, the other
The odd thing was that my brother, who was in high school then, was there. On the way home he and my Mom talked
about what had happened. At that time, I had no idea what the Twin Towers were or the amount of damage that had
been done as I had not seen footage of anything yet. When we arrived home, the TV came on and
didn't go off for days, my whole family sat there and watched the updates and broadcasts of what
had happened. I remember we went to church that evening and everyone was crying and praying.
I remember going to bed that night and thinking that everything, in one day, had changed.
