2024 Holiday Gift Guide Featured Gift
Thank you to Modular Robotics for sponsoring and providing me with product for this post. All thoughts are my own.
As a mom of three with kids in three different age groups, I am often asked for gift recommendations by family and friends. I have one child under five, another in elementary school, and a teenager. Each year for Christmas, my husband and I try to look for a gift that all three of them can enjoy. With large age gaps between kids, it's no easy task. We have a large family that loves to spoil our kids with toys and games for birthdays and for Christmas, so I make it a personal goal of mine to look for something unique and educational.
A lot of parents and kids hear 'educational gift' and wrinkle their noses. Where's the fun in that? I have focused on educational products for my children from a very early age. I like to think it's had something to do with the fact that they have all been early readers, are advanced in or ahead of their grade level standards/requirements, and are incredibly well-spoken with vast vocabularies.
My older two children love to know how things work, and love asking questions and solving problems. My teen takes an interest in coding, gaming, engineering, robotics, and loves showing his parents cool apps. My oldest daughter has a lot of her own interests, but she also shadows her older brother and wants to be doing what he's doing.
Meet the Cubelets Curiosity Set
by Modular Robotics
My kids were so intrigued by the Cubelets Curiosity Set, and couldn't wait to check it out.
Our family has discovered the most amazing gift for kids- the Cubelets Curiosity Set by Modular Robotics. Cubelets are robotic blocks that can be played with, built with, and coded to respond in various ways. They're building blocks for better thinkers.
My kids love to build with blocks and bricks, so they were immediately drawn to the magnetic blocks in the Cubelets Curiosity Set. The set comes with ten magnetic and robotic/responsive blocks that anyone can pick up and build with. Each block has a specific purpose. The set also includes two brick connectors (so you can add onto these pieces with other building sets), and a Bluetooth hat.
Everything needed to start building your own robots is included in this amazing set!
If you've ever wanted to build robots, this is the set to start with. The Cubelets Curiosity Set makes it so easy for kids to explore, build and play as young as four years old. My three-year-old is incredibly interested in these robotic blocks and has loved watching her brother and sister build with them. She can't wait until she's just a little bit older and can explore with them, too.
No time to waste! My kids dove right into the Curiosity Set and started exploring.
Within just seconds of opening the Curiosity Set, my kids were removing the blocks, and looking through the included curiosity guide. The guide is packed with helpful information, including easy-to-read and easy-to-understand explanations of each block/piece and its function (with pictures of each piece). As the kids looked through the guide together, they quickly learned that all of the blocks do different things, such as provide energy, drive, twirl, shine light, etc.
The Cubelets Apps allow users to connect and code!
The blocks connect together magnetically. You can configure them all sorts of different ways to build different robots. Use the blocks to enable different functions. The included Bluetooth Hat allows you to connect the robot through Bluetooth technology to a cubelet app. Through the apps, you can do all sorts of awesome things, like read robot data, code the robot with new behaviors, etc. I don't know a lot about coding, but my son jumped at the chance to download a (free) Cubelet app and give it a whirl. As a parent, I love hearing 'let's see what happens if we do this,' in a safe learning environment.
'Let's try it this way!'
With five years between my oldest two kids, it can be hard to find an activity they willingly want to do together. I couldn't have separated them from building with the Cubelet robotic blocks if I wanted to. They spent hours pouring over the guide, trying out different configurations, looking at different things through the app, and smiling and laughing. I was flabbergasted that they were doing something together without fighting for such a long period of time.
The kids have had such a blast building different types of robots. After a few hours initially spent with the Curiosity Set, my oldest had to head out of the house for a church activity. My oldest daughter stayed home, and enjoyed the Curiosity Set by herself for several hours. Even with the temptation of other toys and devices sitting around the house, she was glued to this fantastic set. She even impressed me and her dad by building a 'bucking bronco' all on her own. She connected the blocks in a way that moved forward and backward, added the Bluetooth Hat, and then controlled the movement by waving her hand over the top of her creation. The robot would then jump or 'buck' with the movement of her hand. Incredible!
'Okay, hold on... I've almost got it!'
Once the kids were home together again, it was straight back to the Curiosity Set together. I almost couldn't believe it. Even my husband wanted to sit down and build robots, and watch the kids figure out how to build some of the different robots shown in the guide book. I have never witnessed a single educational product or toy bring my entire family together for countless hours of learning and entertainment until now.

'Mom, this is so cool!'
I love seeing my kids happy and interested in something other than screens. I love that they can use Cubelet apps with this set if they want to, but they can also build and explore without it. This is the coolest gift the kids have received in a long time. They rush home to build with it every day after school, and they have even asked if they can bring it with them on vacation! What a great product!
