Be Basic This Valentine's Day: Basic Honey

Thanks to Basic Honey for sending these flavors over in exchange for a review. All thoughts are my own.

Valentine's Day is this week! Have you found yourself out of time to make dinner reservations and plans? Do you not want to pay for an expensive Prix Fixe menu?

As a single gal, I often avoid the restaurant scene on Valentine's Day and take myself out for fancy dinners at other points in the year. I also like experimenting at home (when I have time) in new and creative dishes.

Cooking does take time, but it's the perfect thing to do with your loved ones. No matter whether it's your boo, bestie, or kiddos; grab a container of Basic Honey and head into the kitchen!

Using a 100-year-old + family apiary, Basic Honey was created for consumers to receive quality honey. They strive to place honey directly into the hands of the consumer, rather than honey packagers.  While I am far from knowledgeable about honey, I do know that the honey we get in grocery stores isn't often pure and is often mixed together from various apiaries and types.

Basic Honey currently offers two flavors: Gallberry and Clover. As much as I absolutely love it, their Orange Blossom is sold out due to a bad crop of flowers last year. Also, lots of beeswax items are available for purchase too.

Gallberry:

100% raw from the Florida Gallberry bush, this honey is rich in antimicrobial properties. It is sweet, thick, and often lacks granulation that happens with some other honeys. The Gallberry bush is found in Florida swamps and everglades. It emits a white flower with a black berry that tolerates heat and drought rather well.

The high pollen and enzyme content make this the perfect honey for baking and cooking, as the texture doesn't change while sitting on the shelf.

This is a great all-purpose honey that can be used on foods, in tea, and even in recipes!

Clover:

The Great Plains Raw Clover Honey contains a buttery sweetness that hails directly from clover flowers and avoiding other flowers. The harvest, collected twice a year, hails from South Dakota plans and fields.

This particular honey isn't as sweet as the Gallberry, but still has a lovely complex flavor that will sweeten your drinks, desserts, and meals.

What shall I make with my honey?

Honey can be used as a sugar substitute in pretty much any recipe, but you need to be aware of how to adjust your recipes wet ingredients. You will also want to cut the amount, as you won't need as much as a full cup of sugar. Google will be your friend here.

It actually isn't that difficult to make, and the icing is amazing! Of course, the cake can be eaten             without the caramel icing as well.

  • Basic Honey's Hot Honey recipe will also be an amazing treat as well. Wonderful on fried chicken & waffles, an extravagant cheese board, or even pizza, this hot honey will have you wanting more! The best part is that you can adjust the heat level according to you and your loved one's needs.
I like a sweet heat but I'm not a fan of spicy hot hot, so I tried to adjust accordingly. I put my                 honey in a squeeze bottle I've had for years, as I have a tendency to make different sauces, but if             you have a glass jar or other means, that's perfectly fine too.

Hot honey can even be used on a special cut of steak, seafood, and even veggies. I'm kind of                 drooling at the thought of it being delicately drizzled over cauliflower and broccoli. Hmm, dinner          ideas abound!

  • Need a snack to make it to Valentine's Day dinner? Whip up some Peanut Butter Energy Bites using one of the honey options. Add some protein and these make a great way to power through the week or day!
Now my bites look more like clusters than balls, but whatever works is fine! Be sure to have                  enough honey to mold the shape together.

There are varied ingredients that can be used. For my protein, I used Kodiak Cake Cookie Butter           granola along with old-fashioned oats, creamy PB, and mini chocolate chips.

This Valentine's Day, be sure to have Basic Honey in your pantry for all your wonderful meal creations and drink needs.

Don't forget that you can even use honey to make simple syrups for your mocktails and cocktails too!
