Whipping Up More Than Just Whipping Cream!

Whipping cream has never really been a staple in my house except for around holidays to make whipped cream. However, I have found several more uses than just making delicious white fluff!

I have recently begun trying to reduce the amount of store bought (those grocery prices?!?!?) and preservatives in my daily consumption. As I started my research, one of the things that I kept coming across was the many uses of whipping cream. Here are two of my favorite recipes with heavy whipping cream!

BUTTER

I started off small, by making my own butter. When I first told this to my Mom, she told me there was no way I was sitting around churning butter. She was right! Work smarter, not harder, and more importantly more time efficiently; I used my stand mixer. For every two cups of whipping cream that you use, you will make a half cup (one stick) of butter and about a cup of buttermilk! This process is soo easy and tastes delicious!

Homemade Butter

Ingredients:

2 cups of heavy whipping cream or heavy cream

A bowl of ice water

Time:

10 minutes

Directions:

1. Place the heavy cream in the stand mixer and turn it on high. Place a towel over the mixer to catch any sloshing milk.

2. Wait about 10 minutes and check the mixer. You will know if the butter is ready when the butter is separated from the milk.

3. Scoop out the butter, leaving as much of the buttermilk behind as possible, and place it in ice water. After about a minute, start forming the butter into a ball, squeezing out the excess water and milk. Place back into the bowl and repeat the process until only water is released from the butter. Pour the butter milk into a glass jar and save for use when you need it.

4. Form the butter into its desired shape, roll in parchment paper, place it in an airtight container, and store it.

**If you would like to make compound butter, simply add in your herbs and spices, after step three, and place butter back in the mixer to make sure all of the flavors combine.

Coffee Creamer

Coffee is a crucial part of my day, not only for me but for those that I would interact with! I love a good coffee creamer and was so disheartened when I saw all the ingredients and preservatives listed on the back of the bottle.  I also started to notice at coffee shops that they would have heavy whipping cream in a lot of their coffees, so I started researching! While watching TikTok, I found some awesome recipes on how to make my own creamer and haven't looked back! Here is my go-to for each weekly recipe!

Ingredients:

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup of water

1 cup heavy whipping cream

1/2 cup milk

1 tsp of flavor extract (I usually use vanilla)

Directions:

1. Combine brown sugar and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then let simmer for 5 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Turn off heat and add heavy cream, milk and flavor. Stir until well combined then let cool. Once cool put in a jar for storage and enjoy!

  1. Lydia, is there an alternative for the brown sugar if you're wanting a low sugar option?
